I've had this experience but I think the issue was because saying "they" is neutral and doesn't sufficiently validate their need to force you to announce you believe their gender ID.

There was a guy who was part of a loose gaming friend circle. He disappeared for some time then came back saying he was now trans. I used "they" to be respectful because i couldn't break the image of him being a guy. Other people in the group who were more bought into the trans stuff tried to use "she" but constantly screwed up and said "he". The person was actually more mad at me.
