What you're smelling are the aromatic compounds in the poop. These tend to vaporize easily and thereby spread quickly in the air.

So no, poo particles have not gone up your nose.

Indeed. With the exception of close proximity, bare arse farts:

the splatter ring around that was caused by the sheer velocity of the fart, which blew skin bacteria from the cheeks and blasted it onto the dish

If you fart in /u/marley 's face, marley will be on the receiving end of particles from the checks of the arse. But these are very specific circumstances and not the common inhalation of a drifting fart.
