I dont believe the bow drill method really works. One time I put a wood dowel into an electric drill chuck and tried to get it to make an ember in a flat piece of 2x4. That bitch was spinning at 2000rpm and you think I could get it to make anything like an ember? Hell no. I dread to imagine how many hours it would take with a bow drill to spin it equally as much and all for nothing.

I had to make a fire with two sticks in boy scouts, no bow drill. A bow drill would have been a luxury. You need hard wood, either that or you didn't do it long enough, it's not a quick process.

I hope my life never depends on that because my experiment with the power drill taught me if I couldn't get an ember at 2000rpm I damn sure wont get one by doing by hand.

I went to find a video of someone doing this and damn, here's a guy failing to start a fire with a power drill. But you know what that redneck is neglecting is kindling. Here's a crazy Russian doing it successfully.
