Lame, aside from the privacy the Nitter UI is so much better than Twitter's bloated interface. The enshittification of big tech marches on. I'll probably spin up a personal instance like I do with teddit, though using them this way negates the privacy benefits. Archive.today still works and I'll continue posting a mirror with any Twitter links I share.

This one and this one still work, though they both have issues with username searches.

Yeah, it looks like less popular instances will live a bit longer, but

If nothing changes, all remaining instances will go down eventually: Instances rely on guest accounts, which are valid for a certain time and of which you need a ton to run a public instance.

Let's hope that more people will move to other platforms.

Considering you can easily create an account with an anonymous burner e-mail, the only real purpose of Nitter was to harvest large amounts of data, e.g. to train an AI.

I did that once upon a time, then years later, out of the blue, they demanded I confirm a long-gone burner e-mail to log in, and their support told me to f off.

...so create another one. I don't see the problem.

YouTube also did that. Even though I had the correct password, they locked me out of my account because I could no longer get into the email where they sent some confirmation link. They said it was for our safety.

an anonymous burner e-mail

Did you use an anonymous email service?

It is getting nearly impossible to create an email account the media giants will accept without supplying your phone number, which is linked to your name. From my experience, Instagram would not let me use my personal email account which is not tied to a phone number, and so they blocked me from using their service.

For Twitter, I used an old hotmail account I've had since the '90s.

But sometimes I use protonmail.com for a burner address, and it tends to work fine.

I used an old hotmail account

I have one of those, too, which I rarely use anymore. Microsoft probably has an extensive history of my personal communications and it contains my identifiable information. They know who I am.

Sure. I accepted the fact that corporations know a lot about me back in, you know, 2009.

all my burner email twitter accounts got banned immediately so i stopped caring

Didn't even know that was a thing. One reason why I never look at twatter is the retarded login wall.

[–]iamonlyoneman 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

they recently removed the login wall partially, you can now see the posts an account makes e.g. https://twitter.com/whatcatsdid

Is that to just read stuff on twitter, and you can't post stuff?

[–]In-the-clouds 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Nitter also allowed for much faster page loads, while Twitter/X is bloated and slower to load.

Saidit needs something like that

https://nitter.net/ Still works for me. If you use a popular browser, you will probably see them try to block you from accessing it because of an outdated certificate. Isn't that annoying? Or is for "our safety"?

It's both!

Did Not Connect: Potential Security Issue

Firefox detected an issue and did not continue to nitter.net. The website is either misconfigured or your computer clock is set to the wrong time.

It’s likely the website’s certificate is expired, which prevents Firefox from connecting securely.

What can you do about it?

nitter.net has a security policy called HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS), which means that Firefox can only connect to it securely. You can’t add an exception to visit this site.

The issue is most likely with the website, and there is nothing you can do to resolve it. You can notify the website’s administrator about the problem.

You can’t add an exception to visit this site.

Is Firefox protecting you for "your safety" or are they blocking you from visiting websites you wanted to see? I never made financial transactions on nitter or Twitter and it's a public social-media, not secret communications, so I don't need them to tell me if the encryption certificate is up-to-date.

Older versions of Firefox gave the option to proceed anyway. Other older browsers still work with nitter.net.

u/Budget-song-budget posted something similar.
