A simple fix is to make posts by accounts with zero "karma" hidden until approved. The problem is that shills will very actively attack that strategy with accusations of censorship. Every day the front page will be filled with posts about it.

I don't think that's true at all. I think that is shill propaganda intended to stop effective measures. The spam is what drives users away.

A couple of the default subs do that. It does really piss off people who happen to notice their post isn't showing up -- and frankly it's easy for a mod to not notice unless it's mentioned.
