Doesn't matter, generally, as there's nothing on most of those subs anyways.

In the rare case there is a highly-active sub, that is also unmoderated, and also needs moderation, then I would generally look at who has posted there in a way that raises the level of discourse and select them to become a mod. But this is a process that I initiate, not something someone can ask for.

You are going to end up with a lot of vacant subs and ultimately a dead platform. Who wants to post on a subsaidit that has no moderation?

There's a concept called critical mass. When eventually at a certain point, the room for growth is inhibited by the lack of room since areas are overflowing with wastelands. The /s/Christianity subsaidit is sitting with zero moderators, the guy who started it is long gone, and as a result the subsaidit has almost no interaction despite 19,541 subscribers.

It has so many subscribers because prior to a few months ago, all new user accounts were auto-subscribed to all subs, so those numbers don't reflect an active user number in that particular sub, and never have.

Regardless. Subsaidits such as that won't get any active user without moderation, and you will be faced with people from reddit showing up, looking for equivalent subs, finding a bunch of dead ones, and then leaving, not logging back in.

Subs being "dead" has nothing to do with the moderation team, and everything to do with if people post there or not. I've seen more subs killed by over-active mods, than lack of mods

It most certainly has to do with moderation. Christians for example, don't want a sub that atheists can start posting porn to to spite them, and without moderators, that will happen.

In the case of the sub the OP is asking for, its more a problem that the sub has no clearly defined purpose, than moderation. Theres nothing in the sidebar and the title is pretty unhelpful. Participation in a sub won't pickup if people don't know what its even for.

I think you should take the time to establish a procedure for the acquisition of "dead" subs because this you just said is IMO even more ad-hoc and arbitrary than reddit.

Two posts above you say that there is no procedure of acquisition nor will there be, then in this post you declare that you will uniquely put a moderator in charge, specifically in active subs that need moderation. All of this being entirely on your judgment.

The good news is that this has just been raised (ghost-town sub with a squatted name), and the scenario you mention is hypothetical. But I think it will be a reddit-esque shit-show if it comes to happen, and thus it's worth preventing.

PS: frankly I don't even know what dmt is supposed to be about, but squatting of good short names by inactive mods can potentially be a serious problem. Establishing some procedure could both solve this and prevent potential scenarios of perceived admin arbitrary power.
