This is like many "wellness checks" that end up with the person being checked on getting killed or beaten. It's disturbing how untrustworthy and violent many American police are in the last few decades, and how unchecked those types of reactions are.

Yeah, the police are terrible; prosecutorial discretion is even worse. If they like you no charges even if you were rioting and burning down stores (see all the looters let loose recently in large cities with no charges), if they don't they'll throw the book at you and try to stack enough charges to get you 100 years for self-defense (ex. James Fields).
At this point none of it's fixable so I'm not opposed to burning it all down and starting over. The entrenched corruption is too deep to be reformed. The corruption spans from the very top (FBI) to the very bottom (Podunk PD).
