I think it is slowly happening because of the internet. Despite all the giant internet media companies trying to control and stop the flow of important information, the signal is still getting through. There's probably more people that have woken up to the reality of the police misconduct situation in the last few weeks than in the last decade, even if there are lots of people trying to hijack the protests, and the media spin is crazy.
That's the silver lining to all this, the more obviously bad things get, the more people will focus their attention on fixing it. So it's self-correcting eventually, and world history shows us that. Lots of people are waking up to lots of things, and the internet makes it possible. This is truly a historic era.
