Omg, do not move the Earth.

Thanks,
Sincerely,
Life on Earth

happily for all of us, this is not a thing which can be done using the energy available to us

Now that you say we can't do it, it makes me want to do it. Hold my beer.

The actual paper where the scientist proposes such a thing is never cited in the whole of the article. It's impossible to tell if this is yet another case of a sensationalist misrepresentation or outright made up bullshit typical of tabloid rags.

Probably a completely ai generated article and no one checked that it wasn't nonsense

Yep.

Wait, so the sun dies cause climate change not us assholes?

[–][deleted] 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

Also, when did we go back from climate change to global warming?

[–]Alphix 5 insightful - 5 fun5 insightful - 4 fun6 insightful - 5 fun -  (1 child)

Listen bigot, we'll decide it's whatever is most convenient at the time. Got it?

Yes, my liege 🙏

Like how they only report on ice caps melting during the annual summer melt 🫠

Winter protests of Global warming winter weren't very popular.

Even more retarded than Bill Gates plan to block out the sun.

Moving Earth away from the sun

Mkay. Why not move the Sun away from the Earth?

I say we nail down the space flight thing first.

Let's send a "7th" manned mission to the Moon, and see how that goes. I suspect we'll be surprised by the results.

    [–]Alienhunter 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Why don't we just change the fundamental laws of physics and make it so that heat is less hot?

    [–]BISH 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

    That is a luscious idea.

    [–]boston_blackie 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

We can barely get into space and they want to move the earth? Interesting idea we should reconsider in 5023

    [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Yeah, I don't think the guy was planning anything immediate.

If nudged successfully, the asteroid would do a loop around the sun and head back towards Earth, before slingshotting itself on Earth's orbit...

'Do this a million times and the Earth will increase its velocity by the amount we need...'After a million fly-bys, the Earth is in its new, up-town orbit...'And as we have a billion years for the move, this means we only need one fly-by from the asteroid every one thousand years.

'Do this once every thousand years, and over a billion years we can move the Earth enough to keep its temperature constant while the sun brightens.'

There's no way to tell if it would even be required for many thousands of years, our entire concept of climate change is based on a few decades of weather data and temperature readings from airport runways.

    Remember kids, don’t do drugs.

    [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Drugs are fine, don't do science.

    [–]Alienhunter 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Super theoretical physics. By the point you've figured out a good way to literally move the planet (which would require an insane amount of energy to really do so on any timescales that are relevant to humanity) you could just move the rather pitiful amount of carbon in the atmosphere compared to the Earth's mass, somewhere else.

By the time you can figure out this shit your probably have interstellar travel anyway so you could just go find other planets to conquer.

We are running out of oil, and when the Earth runs out of oil this system will collapse, and so the only solution is to eliminate something like 90% of the global population.

Get vaccinated and wear a mask

    [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

Can you provide evidence that suggests we are running out of oil? We have barely even mapped the bottom of the ocean, there could be enough oil for hundreds of years.

    [–]POOPCORN 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

Well that's right we're having to dig deeper and deeper and deeper for having to do fracking and other crazy things to find oil..

And even if there is a hundred or 200 years worth of oil, the environmental damage that is caused by the drilling industry and the oil industry in general could destroy the environment so that all of the fish in the ocean die.

The ocean is now filled with plastics some large pieces and some micro pieces of plastics.. they say that when you catch fish in the ocean now you can cut them open and look under a microscope and find tiny pieces of plastic embedded in its flesh.

    [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Plastic production is somewhat worrying. Perhaps we can find a nice plastic consuming microbiome to gain a symbiotic relationship with to reduce biological presence of plastics. You can call it one of your 'vaccines'.

    [–]POOPCORN 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

So if you are eating plastic when you eat fish, you think that is somewhat worrying? How about if I chop up some plastic spoons and put it into your bowl of spaghetti? I hope you don't get too worried.

I think the thing you're missing is that a little bit of imbalance here and a little bit of imbalance there and pretty soon those imbalances connect and create a huge imbalance which can cause the food chain to become Disturbed and disrupted.

I watch the video once about an oil well at the bottom of the ocean which that's where oil wells are in the ocean they're not at the top of the ocean there at the bottom there on the floor it's just a gushing geyser of oil spewing out of the floor of the ocean because some f******* oil company left it there to spew oil into the ocean 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

When the whole system breaks down, there will be shortages of food, I hope that doesn't worry you.

    [–]Maggotus 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Yeah we have been running out of oil for the last 60 years...they keep moving the peak oil dates...Nothing will collapse, they are just trying to profit as much as possible on the current system before introducing the new system...that's how it works with everything in our history.

    [–]POOPCORN 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

When the oil runs out, or when it becomes very low the oil supply, prices will skyrocket and everything will begin to collapse. The rich will let the party go on until the very last moment the rich will live on their yachts for as long as they can and they won't tell us about the coming disaster until it happens.

When the oil runs out the cheeseburgers do not get delivered to the McDonald's anymore.

When the oil runs out the lawn mower will not run anymore.

When the oil runs out you cannot drive to work anymore.

Everything will collapse. Your stocks will become worthless. The banks will freeze. The entire system will melt.

May God have mercy on us all

    [–]Maggotus 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

When the oil runs out they will have already bought and placed whatever is needed to be the next profitable energy solution. That is why patents get bought and shelved by the companies that buy them....They still have to suck out all the profits from oil before they will implement anything else to replace it. The system will never melt. Unless its from the firestorm of a comet impact...

Yeah and putting a sunshield in place could also do the same and it's way more doable than shifting the earth's orbit. What sort of idiot makes such obvious and obviously impossible statements?

    [–]Alienhunter 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I saw that Futurama episode. The sun shield got hit by a meteorite and didn't work. So they just ended up moving the planet anyway.

    [–]Alphix 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Oh, yes, that went so well last time this was tried in this neck of the woods, didn't it? Just ask the inhabitants of Phaethon how they feel about it.

    [–]bucetao6969 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

As someone who weights a company has climate action policies on his purchasing decisions...

The climate change crowd makes me look super bad. I'm really feeling like the gays at /s/LGBDroptheT feel about the LGBTQ+ movement.

    [–]JewsAreOfColor 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Good. There is no punishment too severe for crimes against homosexuality. None whatsoever. The constitution is unconstitutional for saying otherwise.

    [–]filbs111 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Great idea but might be inconvenient for people.

Why not just move the sun away from the earth?

    [–]IkeConn 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

OK, so move the planet. I triple dog dare you.

I'm assuming this was a thought experiment that's been butchered by the reporters.

    [–]HugodeCrevellier 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

No, even if it were feasible.

    [–]Ferretman 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Technically accurate. Completely unlikely with any technology we know today.

    Hence a foolish article/conclusion.

    [–]Maggotus 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

No Mention of how the fuck they would move the MOON at the same time and keep it in exact placement that it needs to be to keep the earth running the same way that it is....without the moon the earth is fucked. Stupidest article ever....

    [–]at_finn 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

This was a Futurama episode, all the robots had to emit exhaust to push the Earth into a larger orbit of the sun. (Also guest starred Al Gore)
