Viruses do tend to involve to become more infectious, they also tend to become less deadly at the same time. Natural selection favors viruses that transmit well and don't kill or otherwise disable their hosts, as this is not optimal for spreading

If a virus evolves to be both more deadly AND more infectious, BUT it takes a long time to kill you, so you have time to spread it, that's still a win for the virus.
