I hope Voat makes it because diversity and choices in free speech platforms are good for everybody, but if I was a voater I'd be awfully suspicious. Didn't puttitout announce like a year ago he was going to give Voat the tools to run itself so he could step back? Now he's all in and has user's best interests at heart whilst negotiating secret deals. And he did not respond to questions about founder Atko. Hmm...

Thanks for sharing. So Puttitout removed a janitor/mod lite user for asking if there is a delete script for a future potentiality when the site is no longer free, ouch. Reading a little deeper there's theories that this isn't the real Puttitout and thus no one has access to the twitter account. Not looking good for Voat, and Gab has fallen too.

Your welcome. Yea, a janitor was removed for asking a simple question. that in itself is a cause for concern. as soon as i seen that, i deleted my voat account.

https://zeronet.io/ is another good place, not many people use it though. Basically torrent your own webpages with real time updates. A voat "torrent" is on it. It has tor built in.

Very interesting development. I know voat costs at least $6k per month to run, mostly because of their ridiculous .NET Azure licensing fees, because they re-wrote the entire codebase in .NET. It's been a serious problem for them. I do wonder who the investor was and what the terms were.

I thought they got rid of that during the last ciangel investor? I don't see how it costs so much, it's basically mirc with a cache and and ui. The actual name being 4 letters I thought was the most expensive part since I can spend hours and only use a megabyte from voat servers, it's only text once the ui is in cache.

I assume their caching is shit or it wouldn't cost that much. If they are still using .NET on Windows rather than mono on Linux that would explain some of it too. And they were originally hosted in Germany. Face palms all around.

So they never switched even after their userbase basically fixed it for them? The main dude left and puttitout was then in charge, he's a shitty golfer, seen him personally, never talked to him.

Maybe the Linux port stalled out? Nothing new here https://voat.co/v/Voat4Linux/new and on GitHub it sounds like the port is in progress. https://github.com/voat/voat

Edit: their last public commit is over a year old

Porting related Issues were closed with "in progress" as the comment. Hmmm.

No, I don't think they got rid of it. It's written in .NET, they can't just flip a switch and make those licensing fees go away
