Because USA need proxy in middle east. Just like Taiwan and South Korea in East Asia

Do they really though?

Ever since that asshole Napoleon came along we do. Proxy wars are nations choosing to avoid devastating Napoleonic style mass warfare in favor of deliberately smaller conflicts.

I mean it'd be great if there were no wars, but that's not realistic.

Do you think communism would have taken over the world if it weren't for western proxy wars in South America, Asia, the M.E., etc.?

The world, no, but our ideological enemies would have had greater spheres of influence.

Over the USA? Or would the USA (and maybe Canada) be more, say, energy independent?

The US is energy independent. We're a major exporter in fact. I don't know what Canada's situation is. I know Canada has large uranium deposits.

So whose economies are you defending in the M.E.?

There was a time not so long ago we were dependent on foreign oil before fracking was a thing and extracting oil from tar sands was not worth it.

At this point our ME concerns are mostly for stability in the region, and those countries do still help set the price of oil. If oil is too cheap domestic production becomes uneconomical.
