Over the USA? Or would the USA (and maybe Canada) be more, say, energy independent?

The US is energy independent. We're a major exporter in fact. I don't know what Canada's situation is. I know Canada has large uranium deposits.

So whose economies are you defending in the M.E.?

There was a time not so long ago we were dependent on foreign oil before fracking was a thing and extracting oil from tar sands was not worth it.

At this point our ME concerns are mostly for stability in the region, and those countries do still help set the price of oil. If oil is too cheap domestic production becomes uneconomical.
