This is just peak American narcissism exceptionalism. "X gave you your rights" no, you idiot, no one gave me my rights. My rights have always been the same. Human rights are granted for the merit of being a human, not through political activism. Every two consenting adults have the right to marry and found a new family, regardless of illegitimate laws prohibiting it. Right to get married is like one of the foundational human rights.

Even if we entertain the idea that gays being safe, having equal protection and the right to found new families were not human rights, it would still ignore the realities of many, many, many years spent by societies, ngo's, individuals to achieve equality. Like you can create a new mythos, new religion out of Marsha, but in the end, (even if we take those false records to be true) it wouldn't mean anything without an organised force behind it. These people think all those riots just came out of nowhere.

GAY LIBERATION IS OUR HOPES AND DREAMS, CONTRIBUTED BY MANY INVISIBLE FACES AND ORGANISATIONS STRIVING FOR THE SAME GOAL. Fuck off with your overly simplistic adolescent understanding of history and human rights.

"X gave you your rights" isn't American Exceptionalism, it's a sign of a fundamental lack of understanding of the principles America was based on. Rights aren't given, they're defended, that's why they're called natural rights.
