Now, obviously there are plenty of kids who sadly have homophobic parents. But also, in this day and age, there are plenty of parents who aren't homophobic, and are completely supportive of their kids being gay.

Yeah, and also... parents who claim to be supportive of their kids, but behind closed doors say how disgusting they think being gay is. That was my parents, lol. I always wonder how many parents claiming to be supportive actually are, as a result of my own experiences with this.

I'm really glad you're concerned about your niece and thinking about that! I wish I had a gay/bisexual family member to support me like that, lol. I do think, though, that your niece's feelings about this might be due to something more than just "teenage melodrama"; there is a lot of messaging in media about how family is often unsupportive of LGB people, which might've led her to mistakenly assume that the same is necessarily true for her family. A lack of representation of LGB-supportive families might easily lead an anxious teen to make that mistake, I think, which is not really the same as melodrama IMO. Might seem like splitting hairs but I think it's an interesting dynamic at play.

Congrats on the baby! Tangential, but I'm curious, are you lesbian? I'm lesbian and am still on the fence about whether or not I want to have kids, and I'm always curious to hear other LGB adults' experiences with having kids.
