My partner and I were talking about this literally this morning. People are so afraid of offending minorities that they tiptoe either excusing or condoning shitty behavior. They’d rather deal with bullshit than deal with being smeared as homophobic, transphobic, racist, Islamophobic, etc. It’s created a situation where decent people behaving badly aren’t being given the constructive feedback to grow. It’s also created a climate where really toxic assholes are using bigotry as a shield for dickishness.

I think the "shield" thing is spot on. People with less pure motivations can recognize a niche to occupy. I've been around some of the enablers too, and they can get entertainingly whacked out in their allyship saber-rattling. One dude talked about how he was gonna go to prison and make friend with the "Black and Latinx" prisoners. Oh honey: I dare you to to go to the MS-13 guys and tell them they are Latinx.
