While it is a shame that America took their time with rescinding don’t ask don’t tell, it’s good to hear that the institutions made sure that the military was ready for allowing gays to serve openly without discrimination. Better late than never. This is quite a stark contrast from the trans military debate. Gays and bisexuals have had to fight long and hard to convince people to grant us our rights, whereas trans activists just demand rights and people cave in. Even a lot of people who claimed to support gay rights were sceptical about letting gays serve openly in the military, and when September 2011 came and went, there were still politicians who wanted to reinstate Don’t Ask Don’t Tell for a number of years after that. Then Trump announced that transgenders cannot serve, and he got a lot of pushback. Even politicians like John McCain, who voted against repealing don’t ask don’t tell, spoke out against the trans military ban. Either he was terrified of trans activists, was told to oppose the ban by lobbyists, was opposing the ban only because it was championed by Trump or was trying to overcompensate for previously opposing gay rights. But either way, the idea that trans people are more oppressed than gays is a myth.
