    I don’t think it gave us power. That’s the wrong language. It forced us to fight for our survival and out of that grew strong leaders, powerful voices, political organising and a genuine if relatively short lived sense of community.

    That's a fair point. I think this writer may be underplaying or trivializing the harm done by the AIDS crisis when making her argument. I will add as well, I'm young enough to have no experience whatsoever with the AIDS crisis, perhaps I downplayed it when I wrote my comment.

    I don't think it is a similar thing, and my understanding was that the writer wasn't saying it was, but was suggesting that some powerful LGB people think it is because they have not really critically examined their own shame about being LGB. But I could be wrong.
