5% is a huge increase, though. Think about your high school -were 5% transgender?

The CDC (US Center for Disease Control) released a study in January 2019 that found that almost 2 out of every 100 US high school students identified as transgender. That would be 40 students in a high school of 2000.

My high school had lots of gay kids, as did my university, but not one that I knew of thought of themselves, or truly wanted to be, the opposite sex.

Social contagion for sure.

Oh it definitely is social contagion. The title makes it sound like 1 in 4 identify that way (as either queer, transgender, or queer) when really it's also LGB + all that stuff. 5% is still a huge jump within the general population, heck even 2% is pretty massive like in your CDC study.
