My favorite is when FTM say they hate "fujoshi" (Literally what they are - Women who fetishize gay men/are fans of yaoi manga) but turn around and say that yaoi "made them realize they were gay boys"

What these fucking idiots don't understand that Yaoi is NOTHING like reality and it's actually rather discriminatory/sexist, the smaller or more feminine male is always the "bottom" and is often depicted as being abused by the other male. Don't get me wrong, real homosexual relationships aren't happiness and rainbows either (especially if you are a feminine guy) but my point is, the fact that these (usually teenage) girls are reading smut full of rape, abuse, sadomasochism etc and then use it as something to look up to and BECOME disturbs me.

yaoi is bizarre (even just scratching the surface of it). the "feminine" type ones are basically girls without breasts, and for the most part the characters act, think, behave like women do (as stories written by women for women that's no surprise). The relationships depicted would probably have more in common with a heterosexual relationship, or a lesbian one (where they're both feminine) than a real life gay one. It always stumped me that none of these girls would go from reading bara (which is written for a gay male audience by gay men) to being trans men. I guess the men in bara actually look like men because they're built, have body hair, and dad bods and I would assume actually act like irl men. It seems to me the yaoi is more a function of women exploring female sexuality, but just without women's bodies and the more superficial aspects of femininity. It's sad these girls mistake this for actual reality or a representation of gay male relationships. That, and a lot of them would be autoandrophilic.

I think there is something here. Because the feminine one is one step removed from the woman (by being a "man") it allows them to explore unequal power dynamics in hetero relationships and the way men will be violent and controlling towards women. Like I don't think this is just why they like yaoi (it's porn, duh), but I think it could explain why the famale one tends to be controlled and abused and why they might prefer yaoi with a feminine man vs a straight romance.

You might find this thread interesting if you haven't seen it already! https://saidit.net/s/GenderCritical/comments/5n2b/the_role_of_yaoianime_bl_in_the_gay_tif/ It definitely opened my eyes to what might be going on.

wait? So is the character being like genderbent/rule 63? Becuase I noticed that too. Or the character is originally male but turned female and the boyfriend is like A-okay with it despite being gay :/

          act, think, behave like women

          Stereotypically*

I believe some bara (which is majority written by gay men) is also starting to get there too with the sexual violence. For example, Gengoroh Tagame is known for his graphic sexual violence, hypermasculinity, and sadomasochism. Nothing wrong with that since it's fiction but some bara and yaoi? holy shit...
