Ideas.... From what I've seen this shit comes in waves and the waves last about 4-7 years until the new trend starts and the old trend dies, and I think this has a lot to do with the coming of the internet into our lives, and with middle school kids moving onto high school, high school kids moving onto college, and college kids moving onto real life.

I can give a rough example like this:

Late 1990's-Early 2000's - Eating Disorders, Pro-Ana clubs, self-diagnosing with a mental/developmental disorder, most popular for girls = depression, most popular for boys = Aspergers. Anime fandoms, people thinking they have anime headmates (a form of faking Multiple Personality Disorder, which is renamed Dissociative Identity Disorder at this time.)

Mid 2000's - The Emo/Scene trend hits IRL teens HARD. Now both boys and girls have depression and they are discovering newer and more exciting mental illnesses to have. Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, cutting and showing pictures of your cuts is popular, EDs are still popular, the anime people are still being weird, being a furry is popular, beyond furry-ism, people are claiming to be otherkins. Identifying as a dragon trapped in a human body and going unchallenged is a precursor of things to come. Meanwhile on 4chan, the boys are durr-hurring over how "Traps are gay" but also "Sigh.... unzips..." Also, this is around the time where straight girls are bragging about being bisexual, Britney and Madonna kiss in 2003, but LG and T aren't cool enough to steal yet, and male B does not exist.

Late 2000/Early 2010's - The rise of the SJW. EVERY FUCKING THING is offensive. Even I get called ableist one time for saying "that's so lame!" there are roving bands of lunatics on the internet with pitchforks ready to murder you for the slightest offense. This is right around the time when people discover they are 1/16th Cherokee Princess/"Gypsy" or some other exotic ethnicity that both gives them cool points and is unproveable. It's a very extremely tense time to be on the internet. Everyone is scrambling to identify themselves as something in order to protect themselves from attack. Whether it's announcing your mental illness/disability, your religion, your ethnicity, or.......... Your sexuality..... You figure out some way where you are oppressed, so that people will leave you the fuck alone. People literally say sentences like "As a bisexual muslim woman of color with mental illness, I like kittens." because it's too scary to say anything on the internet without your identity force-field of protection. 2013 - Nonbinary started trending. Bisexual suddenly became uncool and TRANSPHOBIC <--- pay attention, we will see this word again,) and PANSEXUAL became the only acceptable way to be bi. Pansexual at this time was described as "being attracted to men, women, and trans people." This is the time when a huge smear campaign was done against bisexuals by pansexuals, and made bisexuality uncool. Around this time someone in a RPG forum invented the word Demisexual in order to describe one of her original characters. This is also the time when Transsexual became offensive, and transgender was now the term you are allowed to use.

Mid 2010's - Partially because people are sick of this shit, the silent Americans vote Trump into power (I'm really sorry for saying this, I know it's a touchy issue and nobody here wants to hear it or will agree, but SOMEBODY voted for this guy, and my opinion is that the shitty behavior of internet assholes is one of the reasons.) After he got voted in, I don't know if it was that SJW's were demoralized or that anti-SJW's got a surge of hope and strength, but call-out culture started dying down, and people felt more comfortable fighting back.

Meanwhile, Queer, and Trans, which had been percolating in their own holes on the internet began steaming and bubbling over for attention. Tumblr became patient zero for the disease and it spread everywhere. There were neo-pronouns and a thousand new genders being churned out per day. A natural born woman, who claims to be a trans woman (yes, you're reading this correctly) is credited with coining the terms Tucute and Truscum. You can Google her as Idislikecispeople.

Everyone who had been excluded from weaponizing their identity before, suddenly had the opportunity to cloak themselves with the power of QUEER. You probably know the rest of this and I need to start wrapping it up soon, but where it pertains to lesbians is that both straight women, straight men (in the form of transbians), and bisexual women started aggressively stealing that word and trying to warp it out of all meaning. Like imagine a big huge man-lady tring on your skinniest dress and stretching and ripping the fuck out of it with his ugly sweaty body, this is what they are doing. And in a few years, they're all going to be doing something else.

Of course the cycle will move on whether we fight back or not, but my best suggestion is to BE AGGRESSIVE (but only to the people who deserve it, not to innocent bystanders) and be firm that LESBIAN MEANS THIS ONE SPECIFIC THING. Same with bi and gay. Everyone in this sub is right behind you. We're all fighting the same battle.
