Seems a silly thing to be upset about tbh. The media stopped using it many years ago to distance themselves from homophobic politicians and religious groups etc who WERE using it disparagingly, nothing to do with TQ. And really, how often does anyone use the word in every day conversation?

The media may have stopped using it to distance themselves from the politicians and all, but it is a term that describes a person who is same sex attracted. How that is offensive? The concept of homosexuality is a common thing that binds lesbians and gays together. BY definition gay and lesbian means a homosexual man and woman respectively. It is not about using the word in every day conversation. We don't use a lot of words in everyday conversation. It is about the the power of TQs to have the meaning of words woman, female, gay and lesbian changed to center themselves so that all same sex phenomenon are removed.

Words matter and we cant just go redefining them wildly Billy. They are trying this with gay, lesbian, woman. This is dictionary.coms entry for gay as a noun

"Usually Offensive. a person, especially a male, who is sexually attracted to members of that person's own sex"

Now if I am someone who hasn't been paying attention what am I going to think? What to we call gay men if both homosexual and gay are offensive? If woman doesnt just mean adult female human, and man doesnt mean adult male human, then lesbian and gay dont mean someone who is sexually attracted to the same sex. And now they are problemitizing homosexual. They are using language and definitions to deconstruct, confuse, obfuscate and then they can insert their Queer theory much easier.
