It's so weird to have a community for her that is so adamantly against her views. I mean, if I believed a certain writer was super homophobic I wouldn't be in a community to support him.

I think it's because, to a lot of these people, being a fan of Harry Potter is so central to their identity that to abandon it wholesale and actually, you know, cultivate a complicated, multi-faceted personality would leave a yawning void that they'd fill with... I dunno, anime or some shit?

So a lot of them harp on about 'the death of the author' and how we have to view the author and their creations as separate entities, which I find ironic especially given the recent wave of woke iconoclasm that has swept the Western world. Anyone who has nothing less than a spotless record must be denounced as a racist / imperialist / rapist / what have you, and founders of nations and winners of wars against literal, actual fascism are denounced as horrifying villains.

I've always been in favour of separating art and artist. I don't have to agree with everything HP Lovecraft said to enjoy some of his short stories, and you can't deny he had an influence on horror writing for a long time. Then again, liking HP Lovecraft's stories isn't central to my sense of who I am. It isn't even tangential, it's literally just a couple of short stories I thought were kind of cool.

I once said to a student, "If we only taught the work of authors who were thoroughly nice people, we might have a pretty short list from which to choose."

I mean, I think it's fine to enjoy a work without enjoying the author's views. Even if I disagree with their reason for disliking JK Rowling, I'm fine with people losing interest in her while keeping interest in her work. Like you said, someone can enjoy Lovecraft without agreeing to his racist views.

But the weird thing for me is that this isn't even a Harry Potter sub, it's literally a JK Rowling sub, with her picture and all. It's kinda bizarre that you can get banned simply for agreeing with her in a sub that is supposedly about being her fan.

Also, I think you also touch on an interesting point. As much as JK Rowling has been cancelled, people are still giving her money and enjoying her works by simply using the "death of the author" excuse. Meanwhile smaller creators (who would need the money much more) are actually losing their income when people decide to cancel their for dumb reasons. In the cases of smaller creators, there is no "death of the author" excuse. As much as these people might condemn big corporations and rich people, they really are much more likely to bend their own rules to keep giving their money to those who are already rich.

These people seem to feed off hatred and outrage, like they are addicted to it.
