Might Ms Phagan's death be related to this story that broke one day earlier?

Um...

  1. How is your link related?

  2. What story?

  3. One day earlier than what?

"The Murder of Mary Phagan" was a 1988 TV mini-series based on the 1913 murder of Mary Phagan in an Atlanta factory that led to public outrage with a controversial trial and lynching.

Um...Nevermind. Life is too short. In fact, I conflated two stories: the woman who broke the Argentine pedophile scandal before being murdered, and the made-for-TV movie. My bad.

the Argentine pedophile scandal

Sounds interesting. Without getting too long, can you link me to more about it? (To add to this article: https://infogalactic.com/info/Pedophocracy )

You'll have to ask the other guy bc I conflated the two stories about the woman who revealed the pedo ring and the movie. Sometimes I write without putting my brain in gear.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

No worries.

Do you have more on that ring story? Or just that pope video.

[–]hennaojisan 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

For most of these I have downloaded the vids and do not have the links but a search should turn up something. I do not have so much on the Argentine pedo ring per se but it is all related. So these titles are not as up to date as the breaking Argentine story but will give deep background. Sorry if that is a copout. Again, these are not links and some may be deleted but if you search for the title you may find it:

I know about some of them, have seen some, and don't know a couple. I'll log this to add to that article, and it's two lists of acknowledged and accused elite pedophiles. When I come across stuff like this I usually don't read/see it immediately. I pile it up then once or twice a year I go through the pile over the course of a couple weeks until I finish or can't continue. I started the lists because I looked and there were none, so now I feel a responsibility to continue building the lists and awareness. I wish I hadn't even started.

The pedo ring: I think it is just one big ring, hand in hand around the world, supported by police and politicians. I will change to the other computer and send you what I have links on.

Very interesting stuff. I wonder if the movie glosses over the Bnai Brith Freemason origins of the ADL.

Is there a way I can apply one CSS to all my subs, then just change the banner?

Every time I update the CSS I have to copy/paste in a dozen subs, and counting.

Edit: Are there any criticisms to those stylesheets you might care to share. I have several hurdles I hadn't yet figured out but learned a lot and am still confused by a lot. A lot of trial and error.

Also, if there's any graphic stuff you want let me know, now and in the future. I won't disappear completely but I intend to pull back and focus. I'll be posting progress here on SaidIt.

Nope, there's just copy and paste for now. WizzWizz has some ideas for improvements too: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/cl9/could_we_have_a_stylesheet_overhaul/

Are there any criticisms to those stylesheets you might care to share.

The "Create your own sub" button on /s/DecentralizeAllThings isn't styled. And I don't like the comments (only) voting icons having a background color, the button stands out too much. Overall though your styles are looking pretty damn awesome.

Yeah CSS is difficult and gets pretty deep. Trial and error is how it goes for everybody I think. If you do the trial and error live on the page with the built in browser tools you can do trial and error quicker. I'm happy to help you with specific issues like we've done in the past. Thanks for your offer of graphics help, that's awesome. I respect your pullback and wish you the best of luck and Godspeed on your project.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

You had the same idea.

I'll have to check out SASS tomorrow.

The "Create your own sub" button on /s/DecentralizeAllThings isn't styled.

Good catch. As soon as I see it I hurry to fill it because I only get one a week, and if I don't notice for a day or few then that's even less than one a week. So next time I see it I can "inspect" it.

And I don't like the comments (only) voting icons having a background color, the button stands out too much. Overall though your styles are looking pretty damn awesome.

LOL I haven't looked at them for ages. Ya, that's from the "early days". I didn't know much about it and tried to work with the limited stuff I had. I've always felt the background colour was awkward and square, and I didn't like the proportions. I was trying to make the colours muted but noticable to indicate on or off and the difference between interesting and fun. I wanted to avoid green go and red stop, or blue Dem and red GOP, or blue link and purple visited, or whatever and that's where I left it. It's okay and blends in, and that's why I hadn't looked at them again, but it's not great and I'll most definitely revisit them. Good catch.

Why is it "only" the comments?

Why are the voting numbers different on posts vs comments?

It'd be fun to put the number(s) in the speech bubble(s) or rounded-corner ovoids, if I could get the outline to work. Sometimes a lot of things don't work and I have no idea why.

I just discovered rounded corners. My old site had all rounded corners with pngs. Every one.

I still have to address all the tabs/buttons in the header too.

The naming of stuff still makes little sense to me. It's still mostly trial and error, hacking until it's what I want, or can live with, or give up. I don't know how to use the edit tools. Yet. Just like when magnora7 said to inspect the elements, I was like, "duh, of course". Now you say to use the browser tools, and I'm like, "duh, again, but I need to watch some YouTube videos on that". Maybe I can learn to rearrange the blocks (for lack of better words).

All the CSS are the same but the banners. I worry that it's too colourful, but it's actually very practical.

Poking around in the guts of the CSS and it seems like there were several places where it could have been more elegantly coded, even if generated somehow. I should have kept notes. I'll try to ping you next time.

Thanks for the feed back.

I'll be around and posting stuff and my project, so you're not rid of me yet.

I had an idea for an alt day/night icon the other day. Then I thought it'd be neat if it doubled or tripled in size on hover. Then I thought it'd be neat if SaidIt could use animated GIFs. Then I thought, what if I looked and found...

I don't know if it's easily adaptable or not, but it's a thought. Also, I don't know if it's possible, whether through a emoji customization, or some emoji-graphics-loophole to include thumbnails, but that'd be kewl.

Why is it "only" the comments?

The post voting buttons bug me less I guess. Try this one to get rid of the black/dark backgrounds behind the voting icons, that's my big beef:

.theme-nightmode .arrow.up, .theme-nightmode .arrow.down,
.theme-nightmode .arrow.upmod, .theme-nightmode .arrow.downmod { background-color: transparent; }

Why are the voting numbers different on posts vs comments?

They maybe used to be the same before rEddit started hiding the downvote count. That's a good idea to make them the same, you can't see comment scores as easily "at a glance".

It'd be fun to put the number(s) in the speech bubble(s)

Yeah I'd like a more compact button and score display myself.

Maybe I can learn to rearrange the blocks

Rearranging is tricky in css. Usually the server needs to send the html elements in a different order to do it right, or you have to do it with javascript like in a browser extension.

I'm kinda lost about emojis but I think if you have a decent font installed these emojis are ready to go, reddit stores unicode text. open to other approaches too. https://unicode.org/emoji/charts/emoji-list.html

☺ 😁 😁 🤪 👹 💯

Also, did traffic, or at least posts, drop after the holidays? I notice a weekend surge, I think. Makes me want to do a survey to see when people think the most "effective" time to post is or what trends they see.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

No clue, we have shit for insights because we're not using Google Anaytics or an equivalent. I do hope to fix reddit's built in traffic/analytics, where each sub has traffic stats page. Shit I can't show you, Reddit made it non-public https://www.reddit.com/r/ModSupport/comments/6fjwvm/public_subreddit_traffic_stats_no_longer_available/

That's interesting. I didn't know that's what you meant. Behind the vote buttons is a very dark grey, almost black, but not as dark grey as the sidebox, also not quite black (I still want to see when black might overlap to fix it). I wonder why it bugs you so much. I wanted to pull out the colour to make the colour difference when "on" more pronounced without making the colour a glaring eye sore in dark mode. I could add a touch of colour to better indicate an "origin" colour. Since establishing the "S" icon I'm more inclined to skip the bg colours all together and maybe add an outline and/or change the icon (and outline) colour.

More compact would be good. I tried to neutralize emphasis on the numbers but still make it readable. Moving the numbers to the right side might be good too. I tried to do that with the "(source.com)" but failed, to make more like a signature, or a quote followed by the author below and to the right. I wouldn't want to rearrange anything beyond that.

Great emoticons. So many more. And with names. ie Ogre/Troll. But no Anarchist Flag. :(

I barely use emojis but when I do I really want them. I want thumbnails more, and gifs would be nice too. I just thought that if there was a plug and play way to add them then maybe there'd be a way to add custom emojis, and if you can do that maybe just rig it for images.

I'd appreciate it if you could find a way to move the "(source.com)" and/or votes to the right.

To this day, in comments, I'd like to see a greater line space between paragraphs and/or non-word-wrapped lines. Maybe make paragraph line height bigger while making word-wrap smaller? Is this possible?

When you go to your user page, in the "Moderator Of" sidebox, can you make it auto expand rather than display "... and 7 more =>"?

Also, if a user could adjust their own user page's CSS and have their own wiki page it would almost be their own kind of hacked vanity page.

I'd like to float a new SaidIt logo with an alpha channel in the empty top right corner over all banners for consistent branding. Not wedged in the corner, but maybe aligned to the middle of the sidebox and down from the top a bit.

Also, I made a footer banner graphic, but I'm not happy with it. I'd like to crop it down and center it over a field of dark grey, so when the browser is 1920 or 720 or whatever it will still be centered. I was close but the default vapourwave bg wouldn't be overwritten by my new colour. Advice?

I turned off the chat on all my subs, hopefully lightening the load. Also, saves me trying to adjust the sidebox chat colours.

My to do list:

  1. Header - make text and tabs readable on all banners.

  2. Votes - rework aesthetics.

  3. Thumbnail - rounded outline?

  4. Stylesheet - change black text.

  5. Design alt day/night icon? Might be better, might not.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Since establishing the "S" icon I'm more inclined to skip the bg colours all together and maybe add an outline and/or change the icon (and outline) colour.

That's what I vote for.

Is this possible?

Yes, you can do a bigger line height or add margin or padding or whatever you want. Try:

.md .-blocks, .md .-lists, .md pre, .md blockquote, .md table, .md p, .md ul, .md ol {
    margin-top: 0.75em;
    margin-bottom: 0.75em;
}

When you go to your user page, in the "Moderator Of" sidebox, can you make it auto expand rather than display "... and 7 more =>"?

We could. Reddit is doing this on purpose, I guess they want to avoid super tall sidebar blocks, but we could disable this feature. Less javascript running is always good by me.

Also, if a user could adjust their own user page's CSS and have their own wiki page it would almost be their own kind of hacked vanity page.

So like custom CSS just for you that applies sitewide? Doable and lots of systems have a feature like that. Users having a wiki page is an interesting idea. That'd be like their profile data?

Advice?

Make a super wide image like this one https://saidit.net/static/footer-banner.jpg and decide if it should be centered or left aligned. Then the graphic doesn't suddenly stop on a wide screen. I can help you get it into place properly. To replace our footer image use:

.footer-banner { background: blah; }

Also, saves me trying to adjust the sidebox chat colours.

The chat widget is not stylable now, it loads its own css independent of saidit/reddit. It's basically a second site embedded here with an iframe.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Good stuff.

I'll get to the line height and footer soon.

I recommend disabling that "Moderator Of" feature until too many subs becomes a problem, a problem only a few might have. It might be better to have columns or treat it like the wall of text box below the submit new post with all "your subs". FYI, in the CSS I made that box width:100% and it word-wraps fine (without sidebox overlap issues) so it makes better use of the page.

I hadn't intended for a custom site-wide CSS thing but that sounds great too.

I had intended to mean a custom CSS that applied to your personal user pages only.

I don't know which is easier, or if one is easier, or what, but one or both would be neat options in preferences.

One user-wiki is good. More user-wikis might be better, or the option to make several. With CSS even better. And to add images or media even better, though you may wish to limit their gallery, depending on your resources.

For what it's worth, I already have a user wiki so I wouldn't use it beyond the basics, though others may, and it might be appealing to those wanting more in their social media. I don't need user-custom CSS either but I would apply it. It'd be nice to have with a corner switch like night mode.

5000px wide. Wow. I thought I was overdoing it with 2200px wide banners. All my browsers are at 90% for more and smaller text so I extended a little in case anyone else might too, though I rarely fill a wide monitor with a browser.

Can CSS scale images? There are several images where this might be useful. Granted too much scaling up and the bits would show. (Vectors rule.)

Can text be auto-scaled? For example, I might like to use an empty speech bubble and put the vote numbers over it. The greater the number the smaller it'd have to be to fit.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Can CSS scale images?

Yes but only based on the HTML element or container the image is in. Not total freedom in all cases.

Can text be auto-scaled?

Not really. You can center align or left align or justify the text, but you can't scale the font size dynamically or something. I think you just have to worry about 1-4 or maybe 5 characters though.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Freemasons were not mentioned that I recall

They actually mentioned B'nai B'rith briefly in passing a few times without context other than once saying it was "a charity or something" and that Leo Frank was a member. The movie makes it out that Leo was innocent and hanged by a mob, while the black guy was guilty and got off.

Better than average for a 1988 production, but certainly nothing worth watching unless you need to see old propaganda in a predictable drama. I was busy doing other stuff but if I had those 2 hours over (played at 2x speed) I would have watched/listened to something else. I only watched it due to the Tim Kelly / Myth 20t Cent interview ( /s/Jews/comments/e3w/nick_mason_on_leo_frank_and_the_murder_of_mary/ ), and I'm always amazed how Hollywood twists history.

My biggest takeaway was the "powerful" guys who came down from New York, always clumped together, claiming to be weak and need to defend him, etc. This obvious contradiction was there for all to see, for the characters in the story and the viewers at home, yet no one comments on it like we're programmed to ignore it. Weird.
