The exposure of one’s unironic interest or passion for any subject/activity will inevitably result in immediate derision by someone, somewhere. You follow politics closely? Opinionated, self-superior blowhard. You enjoy rock? Maybe play the occasional tune at social gatherings? Well, you’re just some douche trying to compensate for his nonexistent personality in a desperate attempt to get laid. Like automobiles and real estate? Materialistic fuck, spiraling into a deluge of meaningless consumption because of Napoleon syndrome or whatever.

While this attitude has always been prevalent among certain groups (particularly people who are susceptible to jealousy), it HAS been purveyed in recent years by internet-based meme humor, which has essentially induced the public to instinctively associate all strong beliefs/interests with hypocrisy and a lack of self-awareness (think of sjws, anti-sjws, socialists, Bernie Bros, internet atheists, incels...). On top of this, internet’s tendency to relay everyone’s take on everything oftentimes renders normies insecure about liking the things they are naturally inclined to have a preference for. This is probably why there are no widespread political/social movements (outside of half-hearted hashtags) among young people, as there were at almost every other point in human history. Think about the way hippies went apeshit over Vietnam, or the way communist youths would protest Reagan. Would that happen today? No. No one can close their eyes and fall into anything anymore, they always choke out of embarrassment and return to accepted social order. Even now, I sound like a ‘le wrong generation’ retard. God, I wish I were a college student in the 80s. That would have been so fucking cool.
