the idea of true love [...] being the only thing that matters is cringe.

Ugly pop culture truth.

I can get the wachowski's putting some romance in a movie, that could help it's box office, people like it no doubt. But in the first matrix it was set up oddly, trinity meets Mr. Anderson and right away they're in love, and no reason is given. Then in the sequels the nature of the matrix is never explained beyond the architect's cringe dialogue and Neo saves Trinity out of love so apparently that is the main moral of the story of the whole thing, not all the other cool philophical stuff in the movies. And that's just continued and is even more cringier in the new sequel. Fine if the whole sequence of movies is about true love conquering all, at least have better writing and acting to show the main characters have chemistry.

The next sequel may explain how love is an illusion.
