A lot has changed in the past couple of years though. I doubt those men would escape chastisement if they announced they were considering those roles today either.

Yeah, I have a feeling that they'd get roasted if they cast non trans actors playing trans characters. The funny thing is that if they're going to show the before and after in the movie, they have no choice but to cast non trans actors; they can't wait for a body pumped full of hormones for years to return to its natural state, not to mention dealing with the mental fallout from mucking about with body and brain chemistry in a short time frame.

Yeah, the only way to do it respectfully is to make the movie NOT about the transitioning process, which to my mind seems fine. You can have a trans actor playing a trans character who is wandering about the place living a life, not a trans character whose sole character trait is "Is Trans" and whose entire storyline is "Is Trans, Transitions". I've seen indie type shows where trans actors are cast as trans characters - usually not the main character - and it's just incidental that they are trans.
