"I'm writing to you today as a UK citizen who is very happy to see the brakes put on to the Gender Recognition Act in this country. On 14th June, The Sunday Times had as its front page an article on how the controversial reforms to the Gender Recognition Act were being shelved.
The inital consultation period on the Gender Recognition Act was poorly done, without any input from women's organisations who were deeply concerned about the long-term impacts of self-identification on female-only spaces such as changing rooms, prisons and hospital wards while also eroding women's contribution ot sports. Wthout these voices being heard, it is no surprise that 70% of respondents were said to be in favour of these reforms. Ignoring women's voices sent a clear message that these concerns were not considered worthy of note. This is, of course, be a worrying message to signal from government and I am pleased to see that you have not greenlighted such unnecessary and potentially dangerous reforms.
The threat of "rollbacks to trans rights, dignity, and legal protections" will doubtless be overstated by certain actors. I’m asking you not to reverse direction with regards to this in the face of pressure from certain organisations promulgating misleading claims and misinformation. Please do not allow women's lives to be used as a pawn in a game they didn’t ask to play – women simply want to get on with their lives in safety and in peace.
Unduly excluding women from public spaces previousl reserved for females only would be a huge step in the wrong direction, and a monumental loss to the UK's proud human rights record. Please continue to stand firm against any reform of the GRA"
