There is a problem with cumin adulterated with or replaced totally by sawdust, and it's easy to test. Sawdust floats in water, real cumin doesn't.
I got a bad jar and found out about this when I searched "why does my cumin taste like sawdust."
Edit: you can also avoid fake cumin by buying whole cumin and grinding it to a powder yourself. Indian stores should definitely have it.
