It's common practice in Spain for people to take charge of keeping the pavement outside of their property clean. So litter isn't just a government issue, it effects every single household. The tobacco companies aren't going to get much sympathy there.

I see people tossing their butts out their car window all the time. Irritates me so bad, I just want to grab them and throw em back in but it's not worth the hassle.

This didn't happen when cars had conveniently located ashtrays. I really hate throwing my butt out the window and generally don't, but if I'm at highway speeds in traffic I don't think it's incredibly safe to go fooling around with a cupholder ashtray and something on fire.

It is a problem of our own making by removing ashtrays / trashcans in general.

I took a therapeutic dose of benzodiazepines as directed by my doctor, it's a lot different from recreational use. A real counselor would know that.

    Nope.

This is why you were fired from being my marriage counselor. I'm giving you a one star review.

Fired, sir. Kicked to the curb like the mongrel gutter trash you are. I am taking my business to a reputable marriage counselor next time.

I know you care, you're crying right now in your boat, regretting failing me as a counselor while you jerk off to tranny porn.

If I don't get bp meds I will live a lot less longer.

        I can totally support this.

        i see no downside..

unless gov extorts on pickup costs (ok, probable.. )

but the cost would be passed on to the smoker..

possible ad campaign to help slow the littering

suddenly big tobacco cares about litter

Banning non-biodegradeable filters might be a help.

When you buy something, you own it.
And should be responsible for disposal.

        Why is this any different?

If you own your house, why do you pay property taxes? What happens if you don't pay? You lose your property? But I thought you owned it?

Have you ever purchased a box of houses? Your home isn't a consumable.

The police own your house. You must pay rent to the police. If you dont pay, they will throw you out and auction it to the highest bidder. The winner at the auction now owns the right to pay taxes, but he doesn't own the house.

They really need to just use biodegradable materials for the filters, and that would solve much of this problem. I'm sure they could come up with something that would work. I'd rather have them mandate biodegradable filters than no menthol flavor

Unfortunately some filters can make the cigarette taste like trash. I don't think they make em unbiodegradable on purpose.

I don't think they make em unbiodegradable on purpose.

Neither do I. I also don't think they have any interest in spending money researching a decent alternative if it won't increase their profits, or switching to a more expensive material which would increase costs and hurt sales even if something was available. I will admit I have no real idea if this is feasible, as I have zero actual knowledge about the material science of cigarette filters, it just seems like a biodegradable filter that doesn't taste like trash isn't the most outrageous ask given all the other more impressive things our modern science can do

Zen filters are cotton and they're awful. From a quick search it seems like all the biodegradable options have poor water resistance so when you smoke them the filter gets soggy and it makes the whole cigarette taste bad.

        Like mRNA vaccines...

Soggy filters are pretty gross. What about something like charcoal? I've heard of that being used, although it looks like maybe its just in the acetate rather than a solid cylinder of charcoal

        [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Found these, you seen these before?

        https://www.amazon.com/actiTube-Activated-Carbon-Filters-self-Turning/dp/B00JQ9ON0E

Looks to be paper, ceramic, and charcoal only without any acetate, I'm curious if its any good

Nat Shermans have a version with charcoal filters, haven't tried it myself. That's interesting.
