I can't find any solid statistics, but traditionally fantasy shows/books appeal to young men far more than women. I'll warrant the same rings true here, but because of the success of GOT, HBO amped up the DEI meter to a 1000. Still, it's a stupid and sexist thing to say, but I guess it's okay because it's aimed at men.

Funny thing is this idea that women have a problem watching buff men fight each other.

I think GOT appeals to a pretty wide crowd since it's pretty light on the fantasy elements that appeal to nerds and more focused on the drama shit between the various families. That's a very feminine type of sory, even if most of the characters are men. Lots of infidelity and the like. It's basically like a soap opera except with a medieval trapping.

Lord of the Rings is a lot more masculine kind of story structure. Washed up middle aged short dude goes for a very very long walk to get rid of some jewelry. Conventionally unattractive washed up lead, long quest with definite end goal, destruction of jewelry. Hits all the points that the modern male audience craves.
