Professor Fouchier has estimated that a lab-acquired infection would occur in his lab in Rotterdam less than once every 1 million years. He also estimated that transmission into the community would occur less than once every 33 billion years. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4323420/

Professor Fouchier’s estimates are the opposite of reassuring. They’re alarming. They indicate a high level of hubris. That an infection in the community from his lab might occur less than once in every 33 billion years cannot be realistic.
