It's an absolute disaster.

Intelligent people are transformed into dunces.
It's a tragedy that has spiraled out of control.

In my opinion, this is more like a eucatastrophe, where it's tragic for many many lifetimes, but will have an ultimate good turn. That good turn may not come for the human species, but I'm hoping it will for the planet. At least for the planet.
