Revelation 21:8 - Cowards are the first to hell

8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” - Revelation 21:8

The fearful are already in "hell" while living in their body of flesh on earth. It is a state of torment to be fearful. Cowards show a lack of faith in a God who loves them and works all things for their good. That lack of faith is a demonstration of being distant from God, and out of his protective covering. Cowards choose to forsake God and the peace he offers all.

Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. If a man turns away from his sins and calls on Jesus for help, he will receive peace, and fear will depart. Those with faith shall be bold as lions. Love conquers fear. There is no fear in perfect love.

But cowards voluntarily depart from God, and therefore are in a state of torment. They could turn back at any time, but it is their choice... if they want peace or fear. The two cannot exist together.
