Yes, this. Political correctness is what killed it. Also, normification in general: making the Internet resemble real life and expecting people to interact under their real names.

Government of Canada wants to create a real I’d for all Canadians online….politics truly is a decade behind culture because the real I’d thing was tried by blizzard entertainment in like 2010 and it backfired spectacularly.
