It really is a bit weird that multiple people have independently come to the conclusion that the Earth exists so entities can feed off human emotional energy over the last century when it isn't apparent in anything which happens in nature or something which any of the older religions believe.

And I think you can call this weirdness and OP's question autistic, in terms of impaired reciprocal social interaction and thereby the assumption that the all individuals are somehow imprisoned in the World, with limited free will, etc.
For older religions, Nature is God, the planet is God. That's still true, especially for creatures who've developed with the ability for reciprocal social interaction.

As much as I like the prison planet theory no one can deny it is just Scientology in a different skin.
