Can someone explain what Kiwi Farms was?

I have seen them describe themselves as an e-gossip site, they follow internet personalities, and often criticize them. Some have been doxxed, 3 suicided although it's kind of dubious what role Kiwi Farms played.

At least 2 of the 3 suicides aren't related to Kiwi Farms. Julie Terryberry committed suicide because of a relationship she was in; it was just a coincidence that she happened to have a Kiwi Farms thread. Near/Byuu hasn't been confirmed dead, but if he did commit suicide due to what people were saying about him online, Kiwi Farms wasn't at the center of it -- his thread was a tiny, relatively inactive, 13-page thread before his suicide.
