During the tail end of 2017, all the YouTubers like slazo and soothouse advertised reddit to a massive audience, and the website exploded in size immediately after. At that point, it changed from a very niche website to a social aggregation website, and most people who use reddit are exclusively on askreddit. The majority of people prefer to talk casually, as opposed to talking seriously.
Anyone who uses saidit does so due to reddit's censorship. Thus, questions about the specifics of saidit are serious in nature.

Reddit wasn't exactly a niche website before the end of 2017. It'd been popular for quite a while.
