Albuquerque resident here. I moved from this area a month before this happened because of how shit the area is. Anyway, local reports do say that he did indeed have a gun. Multiple eyewitnesses also reported him acting crazy with civilians before this happened. I do agree maybe not so many cops should've approached the situation with heavy weaponry. Our cops use excessive force all the time especially with the mentally ill. There was even a situation here where one cop went trigger happy on an undercover cop.
