Their purpose is to conceal activities, which if tracked, could at some point be in any way harmful to you in the future. This is why privacy is important. As much as one would wish it were, there's no possible way to truly verify that they do what they say. Eventually you have to place unverifiable trust in something.

I would use the ddg onion. Metager never gives useful results. It does have that proxy service which is cool but that's its only benefit.
