Subtle reinforcement that voting machines are desirable? The paper trail doesn't matter if the code switches your vote or decides not to count it.

True. But they can be audited if there's a paper trail. My personal goal is :PAPER BALLOTS COUNTED BY HAND WITH PEOPLE WATCHING.
But you have to be careful about transporting ballot boxes. The first count should be at the precinct.
