Race relations is like a scab we need to stop picking at, so that it might have a chance to heal. I almost feel like race relations in the US were better 20 years ago than they are now, it was more of a non-issue back then, which should be the intended direction to take things

I agree completely. I've said this before way back when I used Reddit and was attacked for it.
Race didn't feel like such a big issue in this country until Obama was elected (ironically). Culturally, I feel things changed so much after his election. All the police shootings that happened during his presidency that got major media attention too, really sparked things and they did their best to make the atmosphere black vs white.
