How much money you really made from the stock market this year
submitted 3 years ago by trident765 from self.nonmorons
The ETF VOO that tracks the SP500 has gone up 15% this year.
But the ETF TIP which tracks inflation went up 8.3% this year.
Divide 1.15/1.083 and this tells you that your real market gains for the year were only 6%.

6% is amazing compared to what you get in a savings account. And that's basically free money you've done no real work to earn.

Considering that humanity has become completely worthless and productivity is close to zero, a 6% real return is quite good. Anything giving a higher return is just gambling on speculative bubbles.
