WTF. Here's how you do it:

Hey community, here's the code, and here's the data minus paswords and ips. Your destiny is in your hands.

Yeah it's obviously not about code, or money.

He wants to kill that community. He gave 4 days notice to shut down the site for something he's known for 9 months.

My guess is he's been pressured in to making this decision somehow, possibly by feds, combined with being worn out and tired of dealing with it. This gives me the vibe that he just wanted to give everyone a chance to say goodbye, but he's clearly incentivized to shut this thing down sooner rather than later. I think some 3rd party has pressured him in to this. Probably related to the "angel" investor he still won't name.

Agreed, burnout and dealing with the Feds is too much, especially for a site and community that you don't enjoy or respect. What's fascinating to me is that even after all of this, there's no interest by Voaters in establishing their own platform. They're off to wherever will have them. They could have their own Poal easily, but they'd rather go to Poal. Maybe it's like IP2 and they know that they can't trust each other. Anyway they're awful sheepish for "free thinkers".

Looks like they already pulled the plug 3 days early, after just 1 day of warning. Wow. They straight up demolished their whole community overnight. Crazy

It's back up for me. I bet people trying to archive it are giving it too much traffic. I saw a cool grand theory of what happened on Poal, I can't find it anymore but it goes into Private Internet Access changing parent owners, and the owners being of the tribe/very against racism. Seems plausible and they found a recent code change on Voat with said new company's name, from this year. Something like that, I'm sure it'll get posted around in the coming days. Maybe Putt sold the code to PIA as part of the deal.

Ah interesting theory. I'm glad it's back up and they didn't screw everyone lol

Here's that shitshow I found. For bored reading only: https://poal.co/s/QStorm/228810

Ah yes perhaps Kape bought it, that's what another voater was saying in the announcement thread comments. It makes sense given everything we've seen. Inability to make changes to code or release code, NDAs keeping him from saying what's happening, folding extremely quickly out of nowhere for financial reasons that obviously aren't true...

Thanks for the link with all the info.

Good points. Makes sense to me.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

You said they may Microsoft license fees, so maybe that's why they can't release the code?

[–][deleted] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Nah, I believe most of the license fees were for SQL server or something, multiple SQL servers I imagine. The voat leadership was just never interested in it being a community project, not for the last few years at least, I wasn't there in the WhoaVerse days. Plenty of us were in there begging them to port the shit to linux.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Oh, okay. That's quite odd, that they wouldn't release the code, then. I don't think they'd sit on the IP, but maybe?

[–]magnora7 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I read something on one of the comments from the announcement thread that they may have sold the rights to it to a company long ago, and thus legally cannot release the code. And that may also include an NDA that prevents him from speaking about this stuff.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Perhaps that's why they're acting so strange.
