They have 3 million in their BitCoin wallet. Therefore the reasons they have given for shutting down (lack of funds) are total 100% BS. What's the real reason?

[–]Node[S] 11 insightful - 2 fun11 insightful - 1 fun12 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Speculation of some kind of threats or pressure against the site owner. It's clearly not money, as you point out.

[–]magnora7 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I agree, it's threats or pressure against puttitout, only thing that makes sense.

[–]369 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (13 children)

How can someone verify this on their own?

There used to be a donate link, right? Can I see where the address was listed at, as well as the address so we can check it on Blockchain Explorer?

[–][deleted] 8 insightful - 2 fun8 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

Here: http://web.archive.org/web/20190318163821/https://voat.co/v/Goats4Voat/2718020 (but maybe this voat post and btc addy in the sidebar is a troll and this whole thing is just a rumor, although this seems like an actual fundraising voat sub)*

and here's there earlier before-coinbase wallet addy: http://web.archive.org/web/20150701163515/https://voat.co/

edit2: yet another addy showing 97 BTC http://web.archive.org/web/20190318163829/https://voat.co/v/Goats4Voat/1934996

edit3: walletexplorer appears to be showing BTC exchange wallet amounts which is why they're so huge. Only the individual wallet ids shown on Voat should be analyzed. There's still about 300 transactions that might be worth investigating. Imma call this a shallow rumor based on walletexplorers behavior "Displaying wallet [00000014ea], of which part is address 1PhBpbED6uEnrvy5s9F9axBZbK8fWAeZdc."

[–]369 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I don't like walletexplorer for this. Maybe it's just because I haven't used the site, but on blockchain.com, I'm finding 1C4Q1RvUb3bzk4aaLVgGccnSnaHYFdESzY = 58.8~ BTC, 3NZvuAk3Csf1UP1KCmzN9dhiXTwvhTgr9k = .5~ BTC, 1PhBpbED6uEnrvy5s9F9axBZbK8fWAeZdc = 7.1~ BTC

With these added together, going by all of the waybackmachine images where addreses were observably present at one time or another on Voat in reference to donations, we find that "addresses attributed to Voat" seemed to have had a rough total of 66.4 BTC pass through them. Currently, that amount is worth $1.5mil give or take a little. Considering 1C4Q1RvUb3bzk4aaLVgGccnSnaHYFdESzY, for instance, only has .3 BTC in it, I'm guessing the wallet was drained. I had a feeling that "there's 3mil in the wallet" wasn't really accurate. Although, I don't really have anything to defend, so this is more about satisfying my curiosity.

Thanks for responding.

Is... it possible that he doesn't know? Or doesn't know how to turn bitcoin into cash? Or doesn't have access to the wallet any more?

The only feasible reasons I could think of.

Wait, thought of one more. He had a lot of payment processors refuse to do business with him. Maybe he's blacklisted from the ability to do banking and somehow cannot turn bitcoin into money.

bitcoin is easy to sell. you could even do a private deal

[–]Intuit 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Just buy some precious metals from a major dealer like APMEX.

[–]bobbobbybob 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

thanks for the extra info

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Do some price comparisons before buying precious metals. I haven't looked in a while but JM Bullion was a better deal than APMEX last time I ordered.

This looks like you're just posting a link to a random wallet. It's important that we recreate it.

Can you show where this address was posted to Voat?

I've loved Voat but many people don't want open discussion of things to arrive at the facts, but similar emotion-laden steering towards the preferred explanations.

Can't disagree. Some really lame shill-bots have been posting here over the past few months, just base responses to inflame. It's frustrating.

[–]Node[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It's a troll paradise, especially the anon Qtar... er, Q follower sub. Some incredibly sincere flat earthers too. Quite a few fairly unique characters, all in all. It's like here, if half of us were in a cult, and the other half were some variation of 'different'.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Ruqqus is going to be filled with them, I am glad that they are stopping accounts from being created to combat the refugees.

[–]christnmusicreleases 13 insightful - 3 fun13 insightful - 2 fun14 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

They have millions in bitcoin donations. Obvious honeypot.

[–][deleted] 10 insightful - 3 fun10 insightful - 2 fun11 insightful - 3 fun -  (13 children)

WTF. Here's how you do it:

Hey community, here's the code, and here's the data minus paswords and ips. Your destiny is in your hands.

[–]magnora7 16 insightful - 1 fun16 insightful - 0 fun17 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

Yeah it's obviously not about code, or money.

He wants to kill that community. He gave 4 days notice to shut down the site for something he's known for 9 months.

My guess is he's been pressured in to making this decision somehow, possibly by feds, combined with being worn out and tired of dealing with it. This gives me the vibe that he just wanted to give everyone a chance to say goodbye, but he's clearly incentivized to shut this thing down sooner rather than later. I think some 3rd party has pressured him in to this. Probably related to the "angel" investor he still won't name.

[–][deleted] 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

Agreed, burnout and dealing with the Feds is too much, especially for a site and community that you don't enjoy or respect. What's fascinating to me is that even after all of this, there's no interest by Voaters in establishing their own platform. They're off to wherever will have them. They could have their own Poal easily, but they'd rather go to Poal. Maybe it's like IP2 and they know that they can't trust each other. Anyway they're awful sheepish for "free thinkers".

[–]magnora7 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Looks like they already pulled the plug 3 days early, after just 1 day of warning. Wow. They straight up demolished their whole community overnight. Crazy

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

It's back up for me. I bet people trying to archive it are giving it too much traffic. I saw a cool grand theory of what happened on Poal, I can't find it anymore but it goes into Private Internet Access changing parent owners, and the owners being of the tribe/very against racism. Seems plausible and they found a recent code change on Voat with said new company's name, from this year. Something like that, I'm sure it'll get posted around in the coming days. Maybe Putt sold the code to PIA as part of the deal.

[–]magnora7 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Ah interesting theory. I'm glad it's back up and they didn't screw everyone lol

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Here's that shitshow I found. For bored reading only: https://poal.co/s/QStorm/228810

[–]magnora7 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Ah yes perhaps Kape bought it, that's what another voater was saying in the announcement thread comments. It makes sense given everything we've seen. Inability to make changes to code or release code, NDAs keeping him from saying what's happening, folding extremely quickly out of nowhere for financial reasons that obviously aren't true...

Thanks for the link with all the info.

[–]magnora7 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Good points. Makes sense to me.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

You said they may Microsoft license fees, so maybe that's why they can't release the code?

[–][deleted] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Nah, I believe most of the license fees were for SQL server or something, multiple SQL servers I imagine. The voat leadership was just never interested in it being a community project, not for the last few years at least, I wasn't there in the WhoaVerse days. Plenty of us were in there begging them to port the shit to linux.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Oh, okay. That's quite odd, that they wouldn't release the code, then. I don't think they'd sit on the IP, but maybe?

[–]magnora7 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I read something on one of the comments from the announcement thread that they may have sold the rights to it to a company long ago, and thus legally cannot release the code. And that may also include an NDA that prevents him from speaking about this stuff.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Perhaps that's why they're acting so strange.

[–][deleted] 10 insightful - 2 fun10 insightful - 1 fun11 insightful - 2 fun -  (37 children)

Odd that they won't take donations. The answer seems to be "they blacklisted us from every payment option" but a lot of commenters pointed out that they could take BitCoin — maybe they can't pay in BC? There are a few conspiracy theories in the comments, but I won't entertain them right now.

Regardless, Saidit might get a lot of refugees after Voat goes dark, so we might have a bit of work on our hands. We should try to be hospitable, though, so they can speak freely; I'm sure a lot of them will respect the rules, even if some are trolls. Though it doesn't seem like we're on their radar quite yet.

I actually made a Voat account a few months back, but never used it.

Does this place need more anti jewish nutjobs?

[–][deleted] 15 insightful - 2 fun15 insightful - 1 fun16 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Is it anti-jewish to point out the evils in Israel or in the globalist banking cabal? Because some people sure think so. You want to get fucked by the same people who fucked your ancestors, then ignore the cabal. Hate no person, but hate the evil in human societies. Some societies are more evil than others. Some societies have a sick habit of spreading that evil elsewhere, often to walk away and let it grow on it's own through sell-outs and patsies. Is it racist to say that Israel is evil for what it has done in the ME? For what they have done to the US?

Is it racist to say that the Islamic terrorists cutting peoples heads off are evil? Is it racist to say that we should oppose them? What about the people who fund them? What about the people who fund the US? Are they evil? Should we oppose them? Am I a nutjob for wanting to fight against the foes of my ancestors, the victors of many wars? Some say they are Jewish, but that is just silly. These people are parasites, and they are nearly everywhere; they feed off of every society, and they can claim no holding. Real jews are no different than the brainwashed muslims or fundamentalist christians. Fake jews are ancient cabalists, or their patsies. These parasites just play people like a fiddle with their emotional tunes (Holocaust-grief, fear-mongering) and their psycho-babble (religion, psychology). Am I nutjob for hating the shit Dershowitz says? Or for hating the shit other famous Jews spread around our colleges?

[–][deleted] 10 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 0 fun11 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

They have a fundamental right to free speech, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't annoying.

[–]CarlDung 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Why people always start talking about jews?

[–]Node[S] 4 insightful - 7 fun4 insightful - 6 fun5 insightful - 7 fun -  (0 children)

We'll have to ask someone who nose.

Because they can't take responsibility for their own failings, and "dajoos" are psychologically easy to scapegoat because there is such a long history of bigotry towards them that weak minds can rationalize that "there must be something there."

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

lol, I know what you mean, they are totally obsessed. Makes rational discussion impossible. Sort of like talking to a JW

[–]JasonCarswell 9 insightful - 2 fun9 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 2 fun -  (21 children)

Bummer. Also, Enza left. And I've gotta leave for a few months to finish my epic story - the most important thing I know of besides truth-seeking on SaidIt and WikiSpooks. Hold the fort with common sense and a modicum of wisdom. Don't let them change this place too much. We've been through much, but that's a big one.

Remind them that they can create their own NeoVoat using SaidIt code. Apparently they could even federate a bunch of them to avoid an isolated target. It would also be great if they had coders to contribute improvements.

[–]Vigte 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Best of luck on your journey to being an author :)

Thanks! Since I arrived on SaidIt 2+ years ago I've been talking about my top priority story in development, off and on, for almost 20 years. I had started (again, again) New Years last year, but then COVID and stuff distracted me. It's time for me to openly finish a first draft of Bittersweet Seeds so I can share it on SaidIt for feedback before the next stages.

[–][deleted] 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (18 children)

Yeah, apparently Voat won't release their source code, so Voaters might end up using Saidit's.

Prepare for mass migration from Voat. I am one of those. First Reddit turned communist, now Voat is preparing an honorable suicide. I need a new home for uncensored discussion. Hopefully this is it. Haven't seen nigger, faggot, or kike yet though, which makes me wonder. lol

I pop back every other day to troll those sjw's I have 10k in karma and I wanted to burn it up but my best posts get deleted so my score still inches upward, much to my disgust. I wanted to see what happened when I got to Zero.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

They silently capped downvotes on reddit a few years ago, it's almost impossible to burn through karma now. I believe only the first -5 count on a comment.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 4 fun3 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 4 fun -  (3 children)

Really! Well fuck me, that's cunning of them. I hate the place though, arseholes left right and center. That's what makes it so tasty :)

There are several boards being recommended. I haven't seen Saidit mentioned much.

[–]magnora7 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I've seen it mentioned a few times. People were applauding saidit's funding model in the voat thread's comments actually, because we actually keep costs low and are able to easily raise it all through donations every month.

[–]Intuit 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Good to hear. It's always sad when the technology side is neglected and its costs are tens or hundreds of times higher than necessary. The parable about the guy tapping the machine to fix it is apt.

[–]Nemacolin 10 insightful - 2 fun10 insightful - 1 fun11 insightful - 2 fun -  (10 children)

So how much does it cost to run a site like this?

[–][deleted] 12 insightful - 2 fun12 insightful - 1 fun13 insightful - 2 fun -  (9 children)

In the past they claimed up to $6k a month because their code is shit and they pay Microsoft license fees. Ruqqus is $300 to 700 a month. SaidIt is around $80 a month for the same traffic as Ruqqus.

[–][deleted] 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

$6k a month!? What the hell!? No sane person would pay Microsoft (of all companies) so much when they could literally just copy Saidit's code, or Reddit's old source code, and change a few things.

As both an economist and a programmer, this makes me hurt inside. At least Saidit is cost effective, which makes me feel a bit better.

[–][deleted] 6 insightful - 3 fun6 insightful - 2 fun7 insightful - 3 fun -  (1 child)

Yes they were trapped in the Windows ecosystem and using Azure. But wait there's more, they used to host it in Germany too! And they started as open source but went closed source for "security." A complete train wreck all around.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Was zum Teufel

[–]Node[S] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

$6k per month seems a little excessive. Wonder if rent and other expenses were included in that.

[–]magnora7 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Nope that's just the Azure licensing fees alone, before any server costs or any other costs. Voat's total monthly cost was probably somewhere around $10k

[–]Node[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Whew. That's a lot of $$ per [traditional 3-word voat greeting - NKF] With no attempt to even pretend interest in recovering costs. I think we know where some of our tax money is going...

[–]Drewski 9 insightful - 2 fun9 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

Voat, the cesspool of the internet. It wasn't always this way; back in the early years I read a lot of interesting posts and had some good discussions. Eventually the user base got so toxic that I stopped visiting altogether. Whether this was by trolls and provocateurs intentionally poisoning the well, or just being one of the only free speech maximalist communities naturally attracted the most unsavory types, we may never know.

Really though, it's a sad day for alt tech and internet freedom. Also really not looking forward to the toxicity spilling over into other free speech sites. I hate to be pessimistic, but I think this may be the inevitable fate of centralized free speech sites, which is why we all need to work to support decentralized and federated communication platforms.

[–][deleted] 8 insightful - 2 fun8 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 2 fun -  (4 children)

Actually, Reddit's the Cesspool of the Internet. Although Voat has become filled to the brim with trolls, Reddit's much worse.

I do share your fear of the toxicity coming here, but I'm a bit more optimistic. Trolls do tend to go to Voat when banned from Saidit, though. That "I love Cher" guy complained over there about being banned, before proceeding to make like eighty accounts just to spam. But I hope he's the minority.

What would a decentralized forums platform look like, btw? I know it would make taking it down more difficult, but how does it relate to this?

FIDONet is the closest thing I can think of that was popular.

I've honestly never heard of that before.

It's before your time. FIDONet was used on BBSs that fell out of use 2 decades ago when the world wide web took off. Back in those days all the information you wanted to share was transferred from computer to computer by modem rather than from a centralized server.

It fell out of use before I was even born...

    hive.blog

blockchain based forum. also a bitcoin like aspect, you can get paid to post.

downside? you gotta register and setup an account. it has 4 passwords. if you lose them, you account is dead.

you build reputation based on those upvotes you receive.. those giving them have higher rep give more rep.

brings a whole new set of fresh issues like those trying to literally milk it.

but... anything you say cannot be censored, maybe ignored, but cannot be actually deleted and removed.

only 'silenced' in the form of your comment/post becomes 'grayed out and small'

i have successfully lobbied when attacked while simply stating my views.

having everyone 'literally invested' in the site is interesting.

lots of people just talking about the website itself kinda sucks.

i love the nature photos and pretty easy to find real people there. people willing to engage as all content is original (suppose to be).

politics is probably more balanced there than anywhere.

I know I’m going to get a hundred PMs from all of Voat’s hottest girls (Voat has some hot women, fact) with tips and tricks on how to help me keep it up.

In fact, he said it quite a bit in the first three paragraphs. 😁
