Yes thats right. The news originally reported that the car jacker was a "victim of gun violence" when he was, in fact, a scumbag that deserved it.

Thats some really poor reporting. But its Chicago and its not well known for the quality of its journalists or reporters.

Dec. 24, 2019

An earlier headline implied that Lonell Irvin was the victim of gun violence. In fact, police determined that Irvin was shot by another person in self-defense.

Previously posted on Dec. 23: An earlier version of this story implied that Lonell Irvin was the victim of a carjacker. In fact, he was killed when he tried to carjack a man.

...the party was in honor of the birthday of Lonell Irvin, a 22-year-old man who was killed in April when he tried to carjack a man.

This is what NPR added after the initial publication.

The NPR article in question linked to a local article that contained this information. NPR deliberately omitted it until they were called out.
