This is something to pay attention to. It's been a long time, but I believe all windings(motor/generator), have geomagnetic orientation. When this baby flips, things might be way different.

I believe windings or coils do have a magnetic orientation, but it is local and not tied or orientated to the earths geomagnetic orientation.
Large electromagnetic waves can overload coils causing them to fry though. A large electromagnetic storm from the sun hitting the earth could cause widespread disruption in this manner and it could take some time to manufacture replacement transformers/coils.
