Background: how we got the generics we have (Or, how I learned to stop worrying and love erasure) Brian Goetz, June 2020 by sproketboy in java

Generics is a disgusting overcomplicated mess. Runtime type checking should have been used instead.

I just stick with the LTS versions. And yeah Java has become over influenced by Jetbrains.

Java 8 without streams and FP would have been good. Java 9 with minimal, slow progression improvements would have been good, etc. Instead, Oracle let the IntelliJ/Jetbrains crowd redirect Java to a messed up, uncertain future. I use IntelliJ now, because Java is so messed up now even Eclipse can't keep up. I use streams, not because they're better but because not using them would keep me out of the cool club. Gee and her gang should go help <cough> some other language/platform out and leave Java alone.

The 25 greatest Java apps ever written by sproketboy in java

[–]SeasonedReason 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Great list she wrote, I'd forgotten about the NASA projects, made me want to go look at them again and many of the others on the list. Unrelated but the whole "you are doing that too much" thing is really too reddit like, frustrating. My mind doesn't work like a computer. When I get ready to comment, it might be thoughts I've been composing for the last hour and I'm now ready to write them, not in 33 seconds or whatever arbitrary timeout is applied.

It's a great presentation. It made me want to start searching more about Java and the desktop in general.

I'm not the author of the project but you could probably ask on their github link.

I don't think it would be much of an issue though. Nasa recently demoed an orbital calculator with JavaFX https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6O9V5nc13h8

Do you have any sense of how many nodes you can use before speed or memory start to become an issue?

I was dragged kicking and screaming onto Java 8 otherwise my old programs would not be supported. I absolutely do not want to move away from 8.
