Wiltold Pilecki voluntarily was captured by Nazi’s during WWII in order to infiltrate Auschwitz. Concentration camps were known, but the true atrocities were not. He collected intelligence under horrible conditions. Then somehow escaped and reported his findings to Poland and subsequently the world.

Imagine if he made them up and then instead of admitting they'd been duped the Allies made up "evidence" and found willful liars to justify their war crimes.
