I could really use a downvote button right about now

What for? Just stick a finger up your butt instead! Works great!

The lack of downvote is probably one of the worse moves saidit has implemented versus reddit.

It lumps together bad comments with useless off-topic random sperg or just repeat comments. They're not the same.

The issue is, the same people propagating these absurdities would equally abuse the downvoting. Did the same on Voat, eventually drove everyone away. Block button is a godsend.

Since low effort people abuse down voting equating it to a disagree button. Not having the option compels the formerly low effort disagreeing party to defend their opinion instead. Not perfect, but better than contending with down vote brigades censoring things because they don't like the content.

What you said is 100% true.

But this isn't about refuting the content, it's about easily censoring content that they don't like.

Although I sometimes feel like I could use a downvote button too, I think it was worth it not to include it, as the option to downvote pushes people to smite people's wrongthink into oblivion instead of debate it. Sure, sometimes awfully unfunny political things end up in /s/funny, but I think that is a decent tradeoff.

I can think of one possible compromise though: Allow an "unfunny/boring" button that only appears in subs like this one geared towards entertainment more than discussion. It would be a bit awkward to implement in the Android client, but hopefully it would not be used very often anyway.

This could still have unintended consequences, though, so I would not want it implemented without much discussion. What if people still decide to use it for disagreement instead, for example?

I got your downvote right here.
